Is it possible to have a comments widget so that tribe discussion can be embedded on an external blog? The discussion would have to be linked somehow to the blog post URL.

The "Post Widget57" is what you can use to fetch "Discussion", "Article", and "Post". 

You can embed the Discussion from your tribe community to external environments, unless that bog provider software is not supporting the widgets.
