For your use case, I'd recommend setting up a group for "XYZ university" and get members to join so you can post in the group.

Is there a way to add a tag to a profile? For instance if I attended "XYZ university" and I wanted it tagged in my profile. Then, if we wanted to notify certain alums about an event, we can see certain individuals that share that same University (or company, profession, etc) tag?
