Is there a way to add the topic to content when the post is being made?

You can let users pick topics and the group while they are posting. 

Go to Admin Panel > Content Types and choose the option that let users choose the topic. You can even make the topic selection mandatory.

For groups, you need to go to the Group App setting and enable that option.
